I've taken the tiles off and as you can see, it's a mess. We've been in this house a couple of years now. The people we bought from were the worst bodgers I've ever come across. Every job is a short cut or done slap dash. We plan to reno the nathroom next year. Full rip out and redo. I need to bodge this up myself for 12 months. We have a bath as well in there so not using the shower is an option.

Eek! I agree. As you have a good shower base, line the two walls with villaboard ( the stuff meant for wet areas, not plasterboard/gyprock) and give it a coat of paint to tissy it up for a while, alternatively a sheet of the tile look finish would do the job pretty easy with some silicone in all the joins. So long as the sheets overlap into the shower base, you'll be OK and it won't leak anymore. You can do this over the existing tiles, just cut holes for the taps in the right spots.

try your local bunnies store, we put 2 sheets up for the shower as a short term solution (about 12 years ago!)
, sometime this year (maybe) the bathroom is going to get a make over (rip everything out, plaster and all, probably only keep the floor boards)
