Question Advise on painting over a half sanded merbau deck

We have a deck with new merbau timber. It has been sanded over the parts where the screws went in, but not in between. See picture.

When this gets painted (with a water based oil), would we see the stripes as we can see them now? Would we clearly see the parts where it has been sanded and where not??

Its hard to tell from your photo but the short answer is Yes..
If there is currently a difference in Colour contrast it will most likely be there after oiling..
Unless you are using a tinted oil..
I would sand the whole lot if you are wanting a unifrom finish...

    Goodluck...

I totally agree with Strom. I always suggest sanding a brand new deck with a quick 80 grit sand. This will remove any burrs left from the screw installation and also leave the deck brighter for coating. The brighter the timber the better the final outcome will be once coated. This could be done fairly easily with a hand held orbital sander hooked up to a dust extraction system. IE. a vacuum cleaner hose taped up to the sander dust outlet.

    Best of luck
