prepping VERY neglected exterior timber these are timber windows that have not been maintained since they were installed in the 70's - what is the best plan of attack, if I am not wanting to replace them?
I'm going to get some quotes for painting, but I don't want to be "snowed" - so any advice on how they need to be prepared.
Ie - sanded ? or wire brushed and cleaned ?.
is there a undercoat or primer I should expect to be applied first ?
or is the corrugations so bad that some "filler" needs to be applied first ?
and I am actually quite clueless about exterior wood in this condition - so any opinions will be gratefully recieved.
If the timber has no rot then what I would do is sand the timber to get a smooth finish. Apply a coat of oil based timber/sealer undercoat. Let it dry overnight and fill any imperfections with a good exterior filler. Sand smooth then apply another coat of oil based timber/sealer undercoat. Let dry over night again. Then lightly sand just removing any grit. Then apply 2 coats of exterior acyrlic.
