Default Stripping coating from door furniture

    Gents
I have copper door furniture and the protective coating (lacquer?) is breaking down. I wish to polish them and possibly reapply the coating.

Problem is getting the coating off. The backing plates are steel (magnet sticks) with a copper coating. I've tried Brasso but it does quite hack it. I worry about putting it on a buffing wheel in case I wear through the probably vey thin copper coating.

Are there paint strippers which will lift the lacquer without damaging the copper?

    regards

    John

That coating is probably "Incralac". Acetone will take it off.
