Default Weathered Window Frames and Sills

    Hello All,

I have an old house that's been neglected badly over the years. I have done a fair bit inside to make it livable and now it's the outside's turn.
Window frames and sills really are weathered and need painting. I know I need to sand them smooth, however I am unsure how many coats of paints to use and to use oil or water based paints.
Hope someone can give me some advice?

    Regards,

    Bowlesy

First question, what material are they, being an older dwelling they may contain asbestos so sanding will an issue.

If they are timber, just take a sample to your local paint shop and ask them to tell you what type of of paint is and what you should do before re coating and what type of paint to use.

    Good luck.

I am yet to find windows/sills that are asbestos.. ???
I would be more concerned about lead based paint..
    Photos would greatly help..
If they are timber box/sash windows (Slide up and down) they will need to be Enamel..
Anything else is best in Acrylic..
If you have rubbed them back to bare timber 3 Coats is best..

    Goodluck...

    Thanks for the replies, gents.
Suspect paint is lead based if that is what was used in the 60's.
    Windows are hopper type.
