    Default Rebuilding a fireplace hearth

    Hi,
To my surprise I recently but a foot through the floor of our tiled hearth (100yr old). I removed the mantle/ cast iron insert and managed to lift the rest of the tiles (with a gentle tap of a chisel). Under this there was a 1 inch layer of broken concrete? poured onto T&G floor boards (the boards were paper thin having been eaten by terminites in the past).

I have read a couple of other posts that recommend using a 12mm cement sheet with a 1 inch layer of refactory cement/mortor then tiling on top. Can you do away with the refactory cement and use, say, a 15mm cement sheet and tile directly to it? If so can anyone recommend a brand of tile adhesive that is up for the task?

    cheers

    thanks Brett,

I should have added that the fireplace will be used (not decorative). The above will still be ok?
    cheers

Had a closer read - sorry my advice was for a combustion heater or the like. Yours is an open fireplace? I expect it gets hotter on the hearth and my advice might be incorrect.
