Default Re-use internal brick wall bricks on external wall

    Hi guys.

Have a 1930's bungalow. Red brick external walls. Internal walls are solid rendered brick.

Q1- are the internal wall bricks the same as the external wall bricks. I'm doing an extension and want matching bricks. I've heard contradictory points views.

Q2 - how clean do I need to have the bricks. Simply chip off all mortar and render, or do I also need to power wash (pressure cleaner).

    Many thanks

Most likely the same but could be a lessor quality brick. They should just clean off with a good swipe with a trowel (lime mortar), and only need a good wash after being laid. An acid wash and pressure blast should clean them up quite well after laying.

as johnc said. they maybe what is referred to as a "common". a tommahawk is often the tool of preference when cleaning bricks. set yourself up with a chair, sawhorse and a couple of cans and chip away!! hope this helps!

    Hi,

I suspect you will find that much of the internal brick is unusable for face bricks outside, unless you are going to render them again. Rendering hid much crook brickwork back in the day.

I recently helped strip a house of about that vintage, and the internal brick was a hotch potch of seconds, broken bricks, half and three quarters etc, rendered and hard plastered.

We got the render off with a spade bit on a rotary hammer, which was powerful enough but light enough we could hold it up. We then used a water blaster on the walls, although we weren't demolishing, just re-rendering.

    Cheers

Depends I recall doing a 1926 vintage and the internal walls provided first quality bricks suitable for reuse. you have no way of knowing until you strip off the old sand render.
