How to cut collar tie I can't find anything in the timber framing guide as to how collar ties should be cut. Looking into "The Basics of Construction and Framing Vol 1 - Bonnici, Aken, Neale, Arden" you can find this diagram:
It looks to me in this diagram that the collar tie has a mitre cut at the ends as expected, but also half way through the thickness, as if it would then fit snugly into the rafter on 2 faces. This doesn't seem right to me if the collar ties I'm supposed to be using has a total thickness of 35mm.
Should collar ties simply have a single mitre cut at either end (through the entire thickness), and thus be nailed or bolted straight onto the sides of the rafters?
Should be full thickness next too rafter.
Collar ties shall be fitted to every second pair of common rafters, or at 1200 mm maximum spacing, whichever is the lesser. Collar ties shall be fixed to rafters with one M10 bolt for ties greater than 4.2 m long or min. 2/75 hand-driven nails or 3/75 × 3.05 mm ∅ machine-driven nails for ties up to 4.2 m long.
Thanks for that, I'll just stick to full thickness then.
I did read 7.2.16 of the Framing Guide, and I suppose given there's nothing about how to cut them, one wouldn't cut them in an unusual way. Interesting idea though.
