maybe linking to the actual light in question may help
Is there a simple way to mount large panel lights (1200 x 300) to a standard timber frame celing?
Yes I know there are mounting kits you can get but at $40+ each one, was hoping it can be done without.
Thanks

You could probably fashion some edge clips out of light steel or aluminium section. How many depends on the weight of the units and the metal used
What is the scenario?
Workshop where looks are not important ? or is the finished result important ?
They are primarily designed for suspended ceilings, there may be better options for traditional residential construction.
Stevo, do you want them to hang down far from the ceiling ? I did a job once and noted the suspension kits seemed expensive for a bit of piss ant wire, there was a lot to be done at various heights.
Ended up getting 100m roll of 2mm stainless wire (you can get them online cheap, or even Bunnings has them) .
Got 2mm swages and eyelets and just made our own, some saddles attached to the light and cheap small carabiners.
An easier way just use some light duty chain and some hooks into the ceiling, some small saddles attached to the light should connect it ok.
The kit you linked to isn't too bad at $19, the ones we were looking at were $39.
Actually just read your post again, are you wanting to flush mount them ?
Very weirdly, I actually have a LEDVANCE sitting in the lounge !! was cleaning up the other day, and found it in a cupboard, need to move it on elsewhere.
With this one (an older one of the one you're looking at, there doesn't appear to be anywhere you could attach anything to the back of it.
Maybe you will have to hobble up something with some angle bracket, may be more of a PITA than it's worth.

I'd prefer it hard up to the celing
