advertising appearing WITHIN my post without my permission

There's advertising on teh intarwebz?

I don't have any problem with advertising as long as it does not look like I have placed it there or it is descriptive of what I am trying to discuss in my post.

How can I pick up crud if all I have done is typed? No attachments, no links, no cut and paste......just typing!

I am not sure what that means. I have to be logged in to type a message.

Sorry, I am not trying to be difficult but it could have been very misleading and I could have received bad advice because it looked like my picture.

If I am responsible for doing that (even inadvertently) I need to know how so that I can make sure that it doesn't happen in the future. If it is a "feature" of the forum design, I need to know so I can scream so more

and if you are saying....log in first and then you won't be annoyed by the advertisement then you may be missing the point.

My thread was about old ceiling tiles. The picture that appears is this:



which does not even look like an advertisement. It looks like I am illustrating my question. It appears with a small arrow in the corner as though it is video. When you press, you are taken to the advertisers site.

Of course, if you just think of it as a picture I attached, I get incorrect advice.

So it isn't a little thing......

It'll be "Content Relevant URLs by vBSEO 3.5.2" and their Google Adsense Targeting Tags, I bet....


Hummm...I shall add the words domination, dwarf, leather and nappy rash to my post to see what sort of ads those words draw....

if it was what Bedford sees then I have no problem. But obviously it rotates....sometimes to these unattributed linked photos (I have seen another example on someone elses thread showing a tractor and no indication it was advertising).

Another example of why this is a bad idea (just having a misleading picture):

I write a post saying that I am thinking of doing some tiling but I am worried that normal tile cement won't be waterproof enough as I am doing a bathroom shower. I do not add a picture but the forum advertising process adds a picture of "ye olde waterproof tiling cement".

Without the picture, someone may write saying make sure you use waterproof cement.

As the picture is there (with no indication that it is advertising) a reply may just say "yep, that will do the job - no worries". I am unaware that the contributor is referring to the photo.

Guys, truly, this is a bad idea. For god's sake include advertising but make it clear what is advertising and what is not.

If you don't log in.......you'll get ads and stuff, that are nothing to do with your post or your thread.

MANY people cruise this site without being registered. They only register when they have something to say.

What if an unregistered user decides to register, log on and answer my question. Yes, when they log on they won't see it but that's not going to bother them, they will answer in relation to the picture they saw before.

Is it a small chance that this will occur? Yes. But due to the purpose of the website, it has the ability to cause an enormous amount of damage.

Besides...it is sneaky advertising - designed to mislead and aimed at the gullible and is not worthy, in my opinion, of the good "brand" that we have all as contributors and administrators built up on this site.

I appreciate that Neil. I don't have an issue with advertising even appearing within my post BUT it does need to be obvious that it is advertising.
