Default hourly rate for senior structural engineer?

Hi, Im doing a small 4x9.5m basic rectangle box timber-frame extension with a skillion roof, and the engineering fees are $1600 +GST

The engineer has broken down his fees and says his rate is $400 per hour. Does this seem realistic?

Depends on the size of the firm and the marketplace they operate in. Certainly on the high end.

Default hourly rate for senior structural engineer?

Seems high. I just opened up a couple of fee proposals from residential structural engineers - medium sized firms:

    Directors - $200-250hr + GST

    Associates - $195hr + GST

    Engineers, civil & technical - $115-150/hr + GST

At the end of the day they will try and charge small one off clients as much as they can get away with.

Why do you need an engineer? Get a draftsman and pay $50 an hour. That is robbery.
Then again there was a member here who paid $5000 and did not even have construction details.

When I worked as a consulting engineer 15 years ago I was charged out at $140 per hour plus expenses. I had work in Brisbaine that cost the clients around $2000 for each one hour meeting (all travel and away time charged, plus full rate airfare (not business class though) plus accomodation, because I couldn't do Adelaide - Brisbane - Adelaide in one day. It didn't seem to deter clients because I got more work in Brisbane than Adelaide. Which is one reason I quit!
