I foguredout that I need F17 2/240x45 for a 4m span.. Instead of buying, is it possible to use f8 hardwood same size? I already have got the hardwood here on site..

F8 is a strength rating so substituting a weaker one for the one you need doesn't make much sense. Why not just prop the middle if it is a temporary one.

I was thinking of that too, but other sections of the house would have been affected since we are planning to take out the floor underneath. We now changed the layout, and avoided to put in the lintel. Thanks for your posts!

What calculations did you use to work out what you needed ?
    The opening is 4m,

What is the roof made of Tiles or Tin ?
    What is the RLW ?
What is the Rafter spacing, so we can check if you have the correct sized timber

The rafter span is 3.5m (plus 0.4m overhang)and spaced at 450centers.
    The roof has terracotta tiles.
I used a pocket span table book, which has only limited options to choose from, so if you have an alternative please let me know!
