Default Creating arch from existing steel door frame

    Hi all,

We have an existing steel door frame in an internal brick wall. We would like to get rid of the door and create an arch opening.

From finished floor to bottom of the door frame is cuurently 2050mm. What are the regulations (NSW, Australia) for minimum heights in doorways. The middle of the door would be 2040mm but that would fall as the arch curves down.

Would frame up and sheet both sides of wall with gyprock. Interested to hear some thoughts

My thoughts, it's funny you want to put an arch in, can't say I have had that request before.
Removing them is a common request, as they were a carry over from the 1970 -1980.

Framing it up and gyprocking wont work due to incompatible materials, you need to brick and render it as you have brick walls.

You could perhaps simply make a false arch using plywood/OSB with wood surrounds which would be removable.
If you wanted to sell the house in the future it would then be simple to return it to original and replace the door

Would it not be possible to build out the internal door frame with timber. Sheet the inside with gyprock and square set it with 10mm gyprock direct stuck to both sides of the brick wall.

Trying to think outside the box here

You will find wherever you join gyprock to render it will always crack due to different expansion rates of the materials, doesn't matter what gap filling compound you use it will eventually crack.

What you are suggesting has a lot of other issues associated with it, starting with you will cover the cornice bottom profile if you stick gyprock to the wall, you will also have issues setting the corner of the gyprock wall with the existing rendered wall, and a host of other issues.

Is it really that important to have an arch, if it is do it the only way you can which is bricks and render.
