    Default drafty cavity sliding door

    Hi guys,

The cooler weather has arrived and already I remember how much the draft roars around my cavity sliding doors. These doors were retrofitted into my edwardian timber house by the previous owner when he completely stripped out the and relined the place.

I can see how to remove the doors so I can "peep " into the cavity but not sure what I might see or what I might do about it. Any suggestions would be good.

Pop the door out and you'll need to try and get some lining inside the cavity. Anything you put in there will decrease the clearance between the door and cavity unit so check your door slides 'straight' into the cavity. Sometimes the door or the cavity might have a twist or warp which will limit clearance.

Line it with 3mm ply or corflute (the stuff For Sale signs are made of). I'd stick it in with liquid nails. Use anyhting that is thin and flat. You don't care too much about the unsulation properties, you just want to stop a draft. Obviously you can stick it in in sections, the slider units normally have about 3 or 4 horizontal rails in them. You may only need to do one side depending on where the draft is coming from.

Sounds like a real possibility. I'll give it a try.

    Hi MUrray44
I did the cavity lining you suggested, today. The most difficult part was "Just pop out the door". After that corflute and liquid nails were straight forward. I used the rails as you suggested. The problem was actually that the door cavity went into an external weatherboard wall for half its depth on one side. But it also meant that I had half a door depth of plaster board that I could use to secure the panels of new lining I cut to sit on top of each rail. Now for some wind to check on my handiwork.
