    Default Steel casement windows replacement

I live in an 60's style brick veneer home and would like to replace the existing Iron/steel casement window frames which seem to be embedded into the surrounding brickworks.
Is there a simple way to replace them without havint to knock away any brickwork i.e. cut them to the level of the existing window frame ?

    Any suggestions welcome

Hi and welcome to the forum - there are a few methods for removing those ghastly windows, but I think an angle grinder and a bunch of patience would be best. Even if theyre in OK condition, aesthetically they are pretty bad I reckon. One friend removed his and replaced them with timber windows. Biggest challenge was ensuring structural support throughout the project but once that was done, it was pretty straightforward.

BTW I have some pics somewhere of a stunning "1863" bluestone home in Brunswick that you might be interested in seeing, just for interest's sake. .... it started out life as a 1963, cream brick venereal with steel windows - even fooled my architect mates when I sent them to see it - let me know if you'd like to see them and I will try to dig them up..... the pics not the architects

Thanks for the feedback Steve. I would certainly like to replace them with timber windows but would not even think of attempting to do it myself as it would be well beyond my skill.
Did your friend have a professional firm do it for him or did he do it himself. If it was a company I would be interested in getting their name or any other company for that matter that could do the replacement of the windows

I replaced all my steel windows last year with aluminum. Sounds just like yours. With a friend helping we broke the glass and cut through the metal with an angle grinder. Then you can pull them free. We jammed blocks of wood into the cavity to screw the new windows into. I also had the house rendered so I guess that helped to end up with a neat finish. Don't know how it would have ended up if I was trying to keep the existing brick. Probably would have needed cover strips around the edges. But as for getting them out, I had visions of using them to build a hot house, but there didn't seem to be anyway of getting them out without breaking and cutting.

Yep - I've done what Robo say a few times although managed to do the job without removing glass first (although some cracks occurred due to heat build up). Once you have a squared off opening you can replace with whatever you want. IMO not worth trying to save - metal scrap value is worth more even now.

I had steel windows replaced just under 3 years ago in Canberra with double glazed aluminium windows made by Rylock. Had them done professionally by Windows Options and it was definitely worth the money.

The major benefits I found were:
    a) warmer in winter,
    b) cooler in summer
    c) the reduction in external noise.

The other thing of course is that the house simply has so much more street appeal.

    Cheers
    Mike

    Default Stell framed windows..Parts needed

    Hi Koowlard

Just noticed your post and may be too late. If you have removed the old windows or will be in the future, I would be interested in any parts you can salvage.
The type of things I'm looking for are the old handles, catches and particularly any window stays in reasonable condition. They are usually broken but I may be able to salvage something. There are a number of brands but I would be happy with anything you don't want. Feel free to give me a call . John 0410 143 841
