Can I also suggest you do some research on social media and dedicated forums. There are hundreds of people with DIY solar who have a similar situation like you have (but it just does not seem as if they are the same.) Ity may be that someone may want to run their house off solar, but auto switch over to a generator when the batteries are low. No different to you who wants to run your freezers off of solar and auto switch over to mains when the batteries are low. Look up "DIY Solar"...

I see there are 2 parts to this idea. a) detecting when the batteries are nearly flat (low State of Charge - SOC) as an initiating event for any AC changeover and, coupled with that, detecting when the batteries have returned to a higher (SOC) and returning the AC situation to normal. b) the actual AC changeover function. I think all of the discussion here has focused on b) and, to me, have missed the need for the changeover to be initiated by something other than the loss of AC voltage...

Well. An update. The aircon has been working OK since the first tech visit. Shocked into action by the high quote, I eventually found a small, 2 man service organisation, again via via google search. They came today and checked over the unit. Their report? - Nothing wrong that we can see!!. " would not like to mislead you into thinking anything is wrong". Gas level is in range, compressor is maybe a little noisy but nothing to worry about for now. Start capacitors seem OK. The boss...

I have come to the same decision as @Whitey66. I have started seeking out a local independent tech with the view of just charging to spec and/or getting him to check for a leak in the same place as before. The only issue is finding a local tech in the southern suburbs of Adelaide. The local paper used to be a good place to find small adds for local independents but with the demise of these papers I am finding it hard to find someone. Foud one on Gumtree, but would like to find at least one...

I had a 5kw, Panasonic high wall split aircon. If it is important, it is 30m pipe run between the inside and the outside units (the max run for this system) and the outside unit was manufactured on 2012. A few years ago it needed a tech to attend to it. He said it had run out of/was low on gas. He quoted a fee to fix the issue and got a second crew to come a day or so later to seek out the leak and re-gas. They said there was a leak at a particular joint. $800 please. It has worked ok...
