A yard gully is the same as a gully trap and similar to an ORG. All three provide a water seal connection with a way for waste pipes to enter the sewer. They also allow multiple fixtures to drain to one point. Another function of them is that they provide a point where any blockage downstream can overflow to a safe spot rather than coming up through your shower. In other words, to keep the Richard the Thirds out of your shower in case of blockage.

Hi Ben, this is a bit of a guess but very possible. The kitchen and shower waste pipes are entering what is called a yard gully. Totally legal, still is. You say the yard gully was blocked with dirt and roots. The pipe leading from the yard gully is most likely still blocked and it is spilling out under the house and finding its way into the storm water pipes and thus into the street. I suggest a plumber with a sewer machine to clear the yard gully and drain.
