Thought of a couple of other techniques:
Use a hammer and flat blade screwdriver to knock the nut around.
Tack on a smaller nut if you have a welder.
Cut a slot in it with a Dremel and use a flat bladed screwdriver.
I think the only way visually is to look at it under a microscope.And then you got to know what you're looking for.
Personally I think it looks like cement board.
Interesting question and I can see why you would want to get rid of it.

A couple of tips, keep the image under 1Mb and if using a phone or tablet, you're better off using the Tapatalk app to access this site.
I think whatever you do, you need to get the soot off or at least most of it and then plaster it. Even just wire brushing then plastering it might work.
